Taking Opportunity Where It's Found
A plan and goals are very important to success but just because you have a plan and follow it, doesn't mean you shouldn't also keep other options open. I've written about my goal to change from my current career to another quite different one. My plan is to successfully pass my current course, take a certification exam, then find a job in my new line of work.
My original plan was to bide my time at work and keep a low profile while working toward my new career goal. But an opportunity presented itself that I simply couldn't let pass. So now I have a promotion, raise, and more responsibility. I can use the extra money to give myself an even bigger cushion for the expected pay cut I'll take going from a high level job to an entry level job. The downside is that my classes will be more difficult as I try to fit studying in among the longer hours and travel.
The important lesson here is that simply because you have a plan doesn't mean you shouldn't be open to new or better opportunities. Who knows where some roads will take you but if you only travel the roads you know you'll never find anything new.
