I used to buy the DuPont Registry to look at the expensive and exotic cars that I figured someday I could afford. It was a dream, a fantasy. Now I suppose I could afford some of the cars in those magazines but, what age and financial restraint have done over the years, is made me realize that there'’s no reason to waste my hard earned money on that. Sure there are luxuries I spend money on but they are far less expensive than a car.
Imagine a magazine that instead of adding fuel to our overspending, leveraged lives could offer alternatives. You want a Porsche for 60k but why not settle for the BMW for 40k or, better yet, a Mustang for 30k?
“"But I could swing the Porsche if I just worked a little more overtime,”" you say. Then why not work the overtime anyway but instead of giving that money to a big corporation, knock a year or two off your retirement date? Delayed gratification is still gratifying.
Upon getting my first job after college I immediately bought a Jet Ski. Probably not the smartest decision but sometimes you just have to treat yourself. So, ok that was fine, but after that one indulgence I got to work saving. I made my first stock investment shortly after that and I've continued to this day with investments now more than I ever imagined.
I still occasionally pick up those magazines meant for people much wealthier than I'll probably ever be but my own internal publisher of Good Enough keeps me in check. How about you?
