My approach is to take this class (14 months), take a review course, then take the CFP certification exam. Of course if I pass I still won’t be able to call myself a CFP because they require 3 years experience. I like that. I could be mad about that but I rather the standard be high so that you, the client, know that you’re dealing with experience.
I’m going to be doing all of this while continuing to work full time. While this knowledge can be useful in my line of work, I don’t plan on staying in my current career. My goal, and goals are important in financial planning, is to get the necessary experience working for a fee-only advisory firm before deciding whether to start my own firm.
In my first class I found that a number of others were also looking to change careers and to my surprise I was one of the youngest among them. It seems we’re all geeks when it comes to money but who better to help you then a financial geek?
The material covered in class and the material we were assigned seemed very basic at first glance but there is a lot of information. A lot of formulas, ratios and general guidelines to remember. To be able to look at a person’s financial information and quickly see where the problems are is harder than it seems.
It’s only been one week and I’m enjoying it already. I look forward to learning more and keep you updated on my progress.
